Shipping and Mitigation
My name is Caitlin Snyder and I am with the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands Secretariat. I am attending Oceans Day at the European Environment Agency and listening to the panel on Ocean-Based Mitigation Measures. A number of expert panelists are discussing issues from international shipping to carbon capture and storage.
For example, did you know that international shipping contributes 2.7% of the global anthropogenic CO2? The IMO is considering technical and operational measures, as well as market-based mechanisms for regulating GHG emissions from ships. While at COP-15, the IMO is supporting the view that it should continue to be the international body regulating GHG emissions from shipping, as well as applying these regulations to all countries.
