The Global Environment Facility

Unites 179 member governments – in partnership with international institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector – to address global environmental issues. An independent financial organization, the GEF provides grants to developing countries and counties with economies in transition for projects related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants. These projects benefit the global environment, linking local, national, and global environmental challenges and promoting sustainable livelihoods. Since its founding in 1991, the GEF has allocated $8.6 billion, supplemented by more than $36.1 billion in co-financing, for more than 2,400 project in more than 165 developing countries and economies in transition.

 

The United Nations Development Programme

The United Nations Development Programme is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges with focus on building and sharing solutions to the challenges of Democratic Governance, Poverty Reduction, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, Environment and Energy, and HIV/AIDS. UNDP has implemented environment and sustainable development programmes in 120 countries, disbursing US$408 million through 2,729 projects that address all aspects of climate change. 

 

Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts and Islands

Created at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002, to advance the interests of oceans -- incorporating 72% of the Earth; coasts -- the home of 50% of the world's population; and islands – the 43 nations that are small island developing States especially dependent on the oceans. The Global Forum brings together ocean leaders from governments, intergovernmental and international organizations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, ocean donors, and scientific institutions, to achieve the sustainable development of oceans, coasts, and islands.

 

World Ocean Network

Inspires individual change in behavior regarding sustainable management of the global ocean and achieves its mission by mobilizing the public through an international network of like-minded sits and organizations. WON supports the Global Forum through public outreach, educational activities, and informational programs for individuals and institutions, on-line and through conferences, professional associations and training, and promotional projects such as Ocean Passport, Ocean Information Pak, and World Ocean Day.

 

The Lighthouse Foundation

Promotes science and research, teaching, culture, and the principles of environmentalism and international development in relation to the world’s seas and oceans.

World Ocean Observatory

A virtual place of exchange of information and educational services about the ocean defined as “an integrated, global, social system thereby relating the ocean to such issues as biodiversity, climate, fresh water, food, energy, public health, trade, transportation, international finance, policy and governance, coastal development, and cultural traditions. A project of the not-for-profit Ocean Classroom Foundation, W2O partners with international organizations to build public awareness of ocean issues through events, sites, and subscription services distributed via the Internet.

 

Compass Light Productions

An 18 year old television production company founded by Director David Conover, committed to non-fiction science and history content revealing the wonder of our natural world, often in a marine context. 85 award-winning productions for Discovery Channel, HD Theater, Science Channel, Animal Planet, National Geographic Channel, PBS NOVA and others. Content includes commercial fishing, wind energy, ocean microbial genomics, coral spawning, synthetic biology, sea level rise, island communities, shipwrecks, invasive species, pirates, vikings, solar science and anthropology, sunrises, and religion. In 2003, Compass Light created SUNRISE EARTH, a new format called “experiential HDTV."  Since then, the series has aired daily for 30 million people around the world.
